Regeneration

SHO’s 1300 acres are dedicated to regenerative land stewardship, increasing the manifold expressions of life on our farm.

From managing forests for medicinal and edible mushrooms and wildlife habitat, to working with natural succession in afforesting our open pastures, to creating wild and human food systems that promote optimal health, to offering safe haven for animals formerly used in conventional agricultural systems, to creating pan-indigenous culinary applications from what grows in the fields and forests on the farm—this broad spectrum of care is where our passion lies.

We don’t till the soil.

We don’t plant in monocrops.

We don’t use plastic.

We focus on soil life, managing for mycelial and fungal communities that feed plants. We avoid compaction with heavy equipment, and prepare homemade plant-based probiotic teas as amendments.

Our duck sanctuary generates beautiful compost which we spread as we insert plants into our permaculture orchards and food-forest pastures, adding to the soil’s carbon-sequestration capacity.

We retain pollinator habitat, avoid the need for widespread tillage, create vital wildlife habitat, and help mitigate climate change all at the same time. And sale proceeds go to helping animals. ‘Giving back’ is the essence of what ‘regenerative’ means to us.
