CBDuck Informational Resources and FAQ

Why do we use coconut oil and not hemp or generic MCT oil? (And what is “MCT oil”? )

CBD is fat-soluble, which is why we “extract” it into oil—meaning we heat the oil with the ground-up hemp flowers to 168 degrees for about 5 hours. Medium Chain Triglycerides promote the absorption of CBD. Coconut oil contains 60-70% MCTs, whereas hemp oil contains none. MCT oil is processed from palm and/or coconut oil, and unless specified as ‘fractionated coconut oil” (which is coconut oil with the lauric acid removed), will contain cheaper palm oil. Palm oil plantations devastate habitat, so we avoid using anything that contains it. We use organic, flavorless coconut oil made by Nutiva, with its lauric acid left intact. The amount of fat in a 1 ml serving is small. The coconut oil allows us to extract the plant’s full-spectrum of cannabinoids, phytonutrients and terpines ourselves, providing a more whole food to you. Nutiva also makes an organic, all-coconut MCT oil, but it costs $60 per gallon. A good link to learn about the different oils.

How do I store my CBD oil?

We store our CBD oil in the refrigerator to safeguard its nutrients. This makes the oil somewhat harder to dispense, but we think the tradeoff is worth it, given our oil’s particularly high phytonutrient content. It’s fine to keep your oil at room temperature, though. Best to store it in a cool place, out of the light.

What about Black Plastic Mulch?
Black plastic mulch is used widely, even on organically-grown hemp crops in Vermont, and winds up in landfills after its use. One 30-acre planting will generate 36 miles of plastic. See NPR’s story about organic farming’s plastic problem here. We don’t use black plastic in our regenerative system.

Many farmers in Vermont are growing hemp in place of corn. Most ALL conventionally-grown corn employs the herbicide atrazine, which is highly toxic and remains in the soil for up to 6 years. If you see hemp being grown in old corn fields, the likelihood of it being ‘safe’ is in question.
